MC stands for Motor Carrier. It is the operating authority issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that permits a company to transport regulated goods for hire in interstate commerce. It is separate from your USDOT number, which identifies you for safety and compliance purposes. Most for-hire interstate carriers need both.

Your USDOT number is your identifier. It tracks your safety record, inspections and compliance. Your MC number is your permission to operate for hire across state lines. You can have a DOT number without operating authority, but if you are hauling regulated freight for money across state lines, you generally need the authority too.

Because the rest of the industry uses it as a filter. Many brokers and shippers will not work with a carrier whose authority is only a few months old. Insurance underwriters price new authorities higher because they have no track record to look at. Some load boards and factoring companies apply their own minimums. An older authority clears more of those hurdles from day one.

Yes. Insurance is tied to the operation, not simply carried over with a number. You will need to arrange coverage that meets federal requirements and get the required filings made on your behalf. We can tell you what will be expected, but we do not sell insurance and you should speak to a licensed agent for that side.

Operating authority is held by a legal entity, and any change in ownership or control of that entity has to go through the proper FMCSA process. It cannot simply be handed over or informally re-registered. Deals are structured around the entity and the required filings. We coordinate that process, but we are not a government agency, and we cannot promise a particular outcome. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you.

That is exactly what we check before presenting anything: age and continuity, safety and inspection history, whether required filings are current, and whether there are liens, judgements or open claims attached to the entity. If something is wrong, you hear it from us up front. We would rather lose a deal than put you into a bad one.

It varies with the age and condition of the authority and what is included in the deal. There is no fixed price list, and we do not publish one because it would be misleading. Tell us what you are looking for and we will give you real numbers for what is genuinely available.

Not necessarily, but time is against you. Value drops the longer it sits dormant, and once it is revoked there is generally nothing left to sell. If you are anywhere near that point, talk to us now rather than in six months.

That depends entirely on how the deal is structured and what is disclosed. It is one of the reasons everything goes in writing and why full disclosure matters on your side too. For your own protection you should have your attorney or accountant review the terms before signing, and we will always tell you that rather than rush you.
